Research Assistantships
Research Assistantships are available for Masters Degree Programmes in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for the academic year 2009-2010. Assistantship per month is around 1500RM. On campus dormitory accommodation on nominal charges may be provided for students who are single. Tuition fees of about 700RM/month for the first six months and about 530RM/month for the subsequent months are to be borne by the student.

Sesuai dengan Keputusan Pemerintah Federasi Rusia tentang penerimaan mahasiswa asing di perguruan tinggi Rusia, maka pada tahun ajaran 2009/2010 Pemerintah Federasi Rusia memberikan 30 beasiswa bagi warga negara Republik Indonesia. Dengan jenjang, persyaratan dan bidang studi sebagai berikut.

Proses belajar-mengajar diselenggarakan dalam bahasa Rusia. Untuk itu selama 1 (satu) tahun semua penerima beasiswa program studi S-1 dan S-2 akan belajar di Fakultas Persiapan (Preparatory Faculty) untuk mempelajari bahasa Rusia dan mata pelajaran yang sesuai dengan jurusan/program studi yang telah dipilih.

Bagi Penerima beasiswa Jenjang S-3, Doktorantura dan penelitian/pelatihan akan mempelajari bahasa Rusia selama proses belajar (tidak melalui Fakultas Persiapan).

4. Persyaratan
Untuk Jenjang S-1 dan S-2:
1· Para pelamar beasiswa harus memiliki ijazah Sekolah Menengah SMU yang setara dengan ijazah SMU Rusia dengan nilai untuk mata pelajaran pokok/sesuai dengan spesialisasi yang akan dipilih tidak lebih rendah dari 80% tingkat maksimalnya (Nilai Rata-rata 8,0). Untuk mata pelajaran lainnya juga harus bernilai baik (tidak ada angka merah). (Untuk Jenjang S-2 harus memiliki ijasah S-1 dengan IPK sekurang-kurangnya 2,50);
2· Kurun waktu antara tamat Sekolah Menengah/SMU (atau lembaga pendidikan pra-perguruan tinggi lainnya) dengan saat pendaftaran beasiswa ini harus tidak melampaui 3 tahun.
3· Usia para calon untuk S-1 hendaknya tidak lebih dari 25 tahun dan S-2 tidak lebih dari 30 tahun.

Universitas Paramadina bekerjasama dengan para dermawan Indonesia memberikan beasiswa kepada siswa-siswi lulusan Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Atas (SLTA) atau sederajat yang memiliki potensi akademis maupun non-akademis untuk mengikuti pendidikan (S-1) di Universitas Paramadina, pada Program Studi: 1. Kualifikasi

Doctoral Scholarships for Developing Countries in Switzerland 2009 by Sawiris Scholarships

The Sawiris Scholarships promote doctoral research for the benefit of developing countries. The projects have to be innovative and develop a method or product, which is directly relevant for improving the livelihoods of poor people in developing countries.

The application procedure varies depending on the relationship that the doctoral candidate has with the ETH Zurich.

Criteria for candidates without link to the ETH Zurich:

Eligibility

To be admitted to the selection process, the application has to fulfil the following requirements:

The candidate

1. Preference will be given to citizens of least developed countries and other low-income
countries according to the OECD classification.

2. The entrance requirements for doctoral studies at the ETH Zurich have to be fulfilled.

The research project
1.The proposal is of high scientific quality.
2.The research topic is innovative and relevant for development.
3.The ecological, socio-economic and cultural context has been taken into account.

The partnership
1. Projects involving a research partner from a developing country have to be based on the
KFPE principles.
2. All partners have been involved in project formulation and development.
3. All partners make a substantial in-kind or cash commitment.
4. The project is integrated into the general activities of the involved institutions.
5. Preference will be given to projects with partners in least developed countries and other
low-income countries according to the OECD classification.

Application procedure
For candidates who do not yet have a supervisor at the ETH Zurich the application procedure consists of two steps.

First step – The candidate has to submit a concept note (details see below) to the North-South Centre. The deadline for submitting concept notes is June 30. In case that a suitable supervisor at the ETH Zurich can be identified and that he/she is ready to accept the candidate as a doctoral student, the supervisor can submit the full proposal.

Second step – Full proposals can be submitted to the North-South Centre by the supervising ETH professor once a year. The deadline is February 15 of the subsequent year.

Concept note
1. The proposed research has to be concerned with the development of a method or product,
which is directly relevant to poor people in developing countries.
2. The research topic has to be within the thematic scope of ETH Zurich.
3. A potential research group at the ETH Zurich, where the proposed research could be

5. The research outline should not exceed 3000 characters (with spaces).
6. Relevant own publications or relevant earlier activities by the candidate should be

Full proposal

A scholarship of CHF 150,000 can be granted per proposal for a period of three years. The application in electronic form has to be submitted by the professor of the ETH Zurich who has accepted to supervise the candidate. The proposal of maximum 15 pages has to include the following information:

The Singapore Government awards the scholarship to Government-endorsed students from the other member countries of the ASEAN. Each Scholarship is for a full-time undergraduate degree course at the Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University. All disciplines except for Medicine and Dentistry are open to Scholars. The duration of each scholarships is for three or four years, depending on the discipline.

The award based on academic merit and places will allocated by open competition. If necessary, a one-year bridging or foundation programme, in addition to the undergraduate studies, will be provided.

To be eligible, a candidate must:

* Be a citizen in an ASEAN country (Except Singapore)
* Possess excellent academic records; and
* Have a good command of English

Candidates must meet the entry requirements for Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University. A recipient of the Scholarship may not concurrently hold any other Scholarship, Fellowship, Grant or Award without prior approval of the Singapore Government. The Scholars are also expected to return to their countries upon graduation to contribute to the development of their countries.

Dental research will be supported within the Graduate School to create a network between the four Institutions, and research from medical and other faculties. A key aim is that graduate students will gain insight into both biomedical and clinical research, which will contribute to the establishment of a translational research environment.

Within this framework 2 PhD studentships are available at the Center for Oral Biology, to investigate; Nerve-target interactions in teeth and bone. Neural growth factors and mineralization.

Project 1: Nerve growth factors and mineralization

This project will test the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors, in addition to their roles in innervation, influence mineralization during dentinogenesis and osteogenesis. If so, malfunctions associated with these factors could cause disturbances both in sensory nerve functions and in hard tissue formation.

Project 2: Cellular and biomolecular interactions of osteoadherin with neurotrophic factors

Mineralizing tissue cells are reported to synthesize and secrete neurotrophic factors, and it has been hypothesized that in addition to their role in neural development, these factors may influence hard tissue formation. Candidate molecules for such an interaction include the small leucine-rich family of proteoglycans (SLRPs), which are recognized as not only having a part to play in maintaining shape and providing biomechanical strength to organs and tissues, but also exhibit direct and indirect cell signaling properties. In turn this can affect cell recruitment, proliferation, migration and differentiation. This project will investigate in detail the cellular and biomolecular interactions of nerve growth factors with the only recognized hard tissue-specific SLRP reported to date, osteoadherin (OSAD).

Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance at CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

At CEMFI we train students for careers as professional or academic economists. Our graduates acquire the quantitative tools and research skills to work as economists in business, finance, government, and academia.

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI is its highly prestigious Master in Economics and Finance. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. In previous years, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed several scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. If new grants are endowed, they will be announced on CEMFI`s web page.An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates. The first year consists of basic graduate coursework and some optional subjects. The second year includes specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. General information:

CBS offers high scholarships and accepts only top applicants. To be awarded the scholarship, one must be enrolled as a PhD student. To be considered for enrolment, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level, and must be fluent in Danish and/or English.

Enrolment in the PhD programme furthermore depends on the acceptance of the application, which must include a short project description, usually prepared in co-operation with the Department. This research proposal should contain a presentation of the intended research question, including the theory and methodology expected to be used.Indicative examples of research themes could be:

* The determinants and effects of board composition
* Private equity ownership: causes and consequences
* Causes of the current financial crises: leverage, board failure and compensation bias

Cambridge International Scholarships (CISS): Cambridge University, UK, will offer, via the Cambridge Trusts, at least 40 Cambridge International Scholarships to Overseas Students who embark on a research course in 2009-10. The awards will be made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.

Value of the award

Each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course.

Duration of the award

The award has a maximum duration of three years and is available to all students who will be registered for a three year research programme, leading to the PhD (including CPGS), that starts in the academic year 2009-10.

Eligibility

To be eligible to receive a Cambridge International Scholarship students must:

1. be liable to pay the Overseas University Composition Fee.
2. be engaged in a three year research programme leading to the PhD (i.e. will be registered as PhD, “Probationary PhD” or “CPGS”) starting in the academic year 2009-10.
3. be engaged in full-time study.
4. have a high upper-second-class undergraduate honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institution, or an equivalent from an Overseas Institution.

NB. All students applying for a course of one year duration or less (including LLM, MSt, MBA, MED, Part III Mathematics, MPhil) in the academic year 2009-10 are not eligible for a CISS award for 2009-10.

The application process

Every eligible applicant for a three year research course leading to the PhD in 2009-10 will be considered to have applied for a Cambridge International Scholarship provided their completed Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form is received by the Board of Graduate Studies before 15th December 2008. Applicants are expected to also seek funding from other sources.

Departments will rank their outstanding applicants for consideration in the competition. Several hundred partially funded awards will also be made by the Cambridge Trusts using the departmental CISS ranking list.

[Norway] PhD Student in Logics for Multi-Agent Systems at Bergen University College

Bergen University College, Faculty of Engineering, has an open position for a PhD student in logics for multi-agent systems. The contract is for 4 years with 25% teaching duties. The PhD student will be attached to the Department of Computer Engineering, and the position is in the faculty`s prioritised area software development. The position forms a part of the faculty`s research programme in software development for distributed systems which is being developed to be one of the University College`s strategic research programmes. The programme currently involves 7 permanent professors and associate professors and several PhD and masters students. The Department is responsible for the bachelor programmes in computer engineering and information technology, as well as a masters programme in software development in collaboration with Department of Informatics, University of Bergen.

Multi-agent systems are software systems consisting of interacting autonomous components called agents. Autonomy entails that an agent`s behaviour is determined by its individual goals and beliefs about its environments, as opposed to central control. Agents need a way to represent their beliefs about the rest of the system, and a mechanism for reasoning about the system. When we design multi-agent systems we need a way to specify their properties and a method for verifying that a system has a given property. These are some of the reasons formal logic is considered to form one of the formal underpinnings of multi-agent systems. Logic is used for knowledge representation for agents, and is the foundation for tools which let us specify, verify and automatically synthesise multi-agent systems. Logics suitable for this purpose are logics for reasoning about various aspects of interaction. Such aspects include epistemic, intentional, strategic, normative, temporal, etc.

The successful applicant must have achieved a masters degree, or equivalent, in computer or information science, logic, or a similar field. Candidates who have submitted their master thesis for evaluation by the deadline of this call may apply if the degree is given within four weeks. No later than 6 months after the appointment is made the PhD student must be enrolled at a PhD study programme at the degree awarding institution (see below).

When evaluating the applicants weight will be put on competence in the research area as described above. The applicant should be competent in formal logic, preferably modal logic. Competence in related areas such as game theory or social choice theory will be an advantage. Existing research experience will count in the evaluation, as will a possible outline of a plan for the PhD research project.

The PhD student must enrol in an approved 4 years PhD programme. 25% of the time will be spent on duties such as teaching, development or administrative tasks. The employment period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow.

Bergen University College cannot award the PhD degree itself, but will together with a degree awarding institution develop a detailed plan for the PhD studies. The degree awarding institution will be chosen by Bergen University College, and has on previous similar occasions been the University of Bergen. The PhD student will be assigned an academic supervisor at Bergen University College, who will collaborate in applying for enrolment in a PhD programme depending on the candidate`s background. An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made. If the evaluation committee finds that several applicants have approximately the same qualifications, the rules for allocation by sex quota in the personnel regulations will be used.

Applicants for the position will be evaluated by a committee consisting of three members. Copies of a written application, CV, diplomas, transcripts, publications and a publication list must be submitted in three complete sets within a week after the deadline. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the submitted sets are complete. The papers will be returned when the case is closed. Teknik Mendapatkan Beasiswa Luar Negeri

Berikut ini adalah beberapa teknik-teknik mendapatkan sekolah untuk jenjang S2 dan S3 ‘gratis’ di luar negeri.

Bagaimana caranya bisa bersekolah ‘gratis’ di luar negeri. Saya memberikan tanda kutip pada ‘gratis’ karena sebenarnya tidak 100% modal dengkul. Dalam beberapa kasus, at least kita harus bekerja terlebih dahulu untuk mengumpulkan uang untuk tiket pesawat + biaya hidup bulan pertama, dan situasi mungkin tidak memungkinkan kita untuk berkeluarga terlebih dahulu.

Jenis beasiswa yang akan saya utarakan pertama adalah jenis beasiswa yang kansnya tinggi untuk mendapatkannya. Biasanya beasiswa jenis ini adalah beasiswa jenis riset, dan untungnya, hampir semuanya tanpa ikatan dinas. Untuk beberapa jenis beasiswa, mereka lebih senang kalau sang pelamar bekerja untuk institusi pendidikan, lembaga penelitian, atau LSM.

Satu rule of thumb yang patut dihayati adalah: ‘kita harus berkelat-kelit untuk mendapatkan beasiswa S2, tapi relatif jauh lebih mudah untuk mendapatkan beasiswa S3′. Makanya jika Anda mengejar waktu, sebaiknya ambil dulu S2 di Indonesia, sambil juga melamar S2/S3 di tempat lain. Kalau dapat S2 gratis di luar negeri, ya yang di Indonesia ditinggal saja.

Daftar Beasiswa Berdasarkan Negara
Secara umum, beasiswa ini memiliki karakteristik:
A· tidak memiliki ikatan dinas sama sekali
B· mahasiswa harus mengerjakan penelitian sesuai minatnya, dan sekaligus sebagai thesisnya

1. Amerika Serikat
Biasanya sekolah sekolah bagus di Amerika Serikat, (katakanlah top 50 pada bidangnya) sering memberikan beasiswa yang disebut stipend, meskipun baru mahasiswa S2. Besarnya stipend sekitar US$1000-1400, tergantung lokasi. Yang jelas cukup sekali untuk hidup. Mahasiswa yang menerima stipend itu, juga tidak perlu membayar uang sekolah (tuition fee). Lamanya stipend adalah per semester, tapi saat summer biasanya diberikan pekerjaan lain di universitas (mostly guaranteed). Kalau sedang sial (jarang sekali), tidak dapat assistantship untuk semester itu, ya pulang saja ke Indonesia dahulu.
Syarat penting mendapat beasiswa adalah harus mau menjadi teaching assistant atau research assistant.

Teaching assistant bertugas membantu proses belajar-mengajar di kelas, seperti fotokopi, setup komputer di lab untuk kelas itu, memeriksa tugas-tugas, dan memberikan tutorial di luar jam kelas. Sedangkan research assistant bertugas membantu professor di lab, seperti membuatkan program untuknya, mengatur laboratioriumnya, membuat dokumentasi riset dan sebagainya. Mahasiswa selain melakukan penelitian, juga masih diwajibkan untuk mengambil coursework (kelas).

Memang harus diakui bahwa ada beberapa sekolah terkenal yang hanya memberikan jaminan beasiswa kepada mahasiswa S3. Untungnya, di AS, mahasiswa S1 bisa langsung masuk program S3, dimana di tengah-tengah perjalanan menumpuh S3 itu ada sertifikat bahwa ybs sudah melampaui jenjang S2. Jadi bisa ngerti sendirilah … :-p

Untuk mendaftar ke pendidikan pascasarjana ke AS, biasanya mereka mengharuskan pelamar memberikan hasil nilai TOEFL dan GRE General Test resmi dari ETS (www.ets.org). Beberapa universitas terkemuka juga mengharuskan mengambil GRE Subject Test, misalnya GRE Computer Science, GRE Biology, GRE Economics, dan sebagainya.

Di Jakarta, cabang ETS terletak di Menara Emporium, Jl.Rasuna Said, Kuningan. Biaya TOEFL sekitar US$60, GRE sekitar US$120. Kalau punya TOEFL > 580 (standar nilai lama) dan GRE General Test > 1750 saya sarankan pergi ke AS.
Bahkan, saya sarankan untuk mendaftar di top 20 jika memiliki GRE > 1900. Go for it!
Pelamar dapat mendownload formulir pendaftaran langsung dari website universitas tersebut.

Dalam formulir pendaftaran itu, biasanya ada pertanyaan dari mana sumber pendanaan untuk kuliah nanti. Pilihlah option untuk ‘menggantungkan sepenuhnya pada universitas dengan stipend assistantship’. Biaya pendaftaran biasa antar US$30-$60.
Kemudian mereka biasanya menyuruh kita untuk membuat statement of purpose. Tujuan dari statement of purpose adalah untuk meyakinkan bahwa Anda layak dapat beasiswa.

Anda harus menunjukkan ‘kemampuan’ Anda, jangan malah merendahkan diri! Statement of purpose isinya:
1. mengapa kita ingin melakukan pendidikan tinggi
2. bidang peminatan kita apa, kalau bisa tunjukkan sedikit pengetahuan Anda mengenai ‘trend’
di bidang riset itu.
3. mengapa kita ingin melakukan riset di bidang itu
4. kalau sudah selesai mau jadi apa dan mau bekerja di mana (akademisi, industri, profesional,
etc.) sebagai apa

Selain itu Anda sebaiknya juga menceritakan:
1. kalau mungkin, tunjukkan bahwa Anda memiliki kompetensi di bidang itu (jadi memang ada
baiknya dari sekarang Anda sudah memiliki bidang yang fokus).
2. tunjukkan bahwa Anda bisa menjadi asisten pada mata kuliah S1 apa saja (jika jadi teaching
assistant). Tapi jelaskan pula bahwa Anda bisa ‘fleksibel’.
Karena biasanya statement of purpose itu harus singkat dan lugas (sekitar 1/2 halaman, max
1 halaman), kalau perlu Anda menceritakan 2 point di atas di luar statement of purpose. Tapi
kalau masih muat, ya masukkan saja dalam statement of purpose.

Sebelum mendaftar, ada baiknya jika Anda memastikan terlebih dahulu bahwa bidang Anda minati, ada profesor yang memiliki minat yang kurang lebih sama di universitas itu. Sebaiknya, bercakap-cakap dahululah dengan profesor tersebut, katakan bahwa saya tertarik untuk melakukan riset. Tanyakan pula apakah dia berminat mengambil Anda menjadi mahasiswanya. Jangan lupa cari muka sedikit :-). Hal ini akan sedikit memperlicin jalan saat seleksi mahasiswa baru. Sekedar info, biasanya universitas di AS tidak meminta research plan yang kongkrit, karena baru saat di sana nanti merencanakan riset.
By the way, sebelum pergi ke AS, kita juga harus memiliki persediaan uang selama satu bulan ($1500+), plus tiket pesawat ke Amerika Serikat.(sekitar $700).

2. Kanada
Sama seperti Amerika Serikat, dan banyak diantara mereka tidak memerlukan GRE Subject Test. Meskipun ada Canadian Education Centre (CEC) di World Trade Center, Jl.Jendral Sudirman, tapi saya pikir cukup ke website universitasnya saja.

3. Jerman
Di negara-negara Eropa daratan (excluding British), biasanya tidak mengenal program bachelor (S1), karena bachelor adalah pola pendidikan Anglo-Saxon. Yang bisa dibilang dekat dengan S1-nya adalah program-program politeknik. Nah, oleh karena itu lulusan S1 Indonesia harus diupgrade agar sama dengan lulusan uni Eropa daratan, yakni Doktorandus (Drs), Diplom (Dipl) atau Licente (Lc). Gelar kesarjanaan ini sama dengan S2.

Seperti banyak kita ketahui, universitas-universitas di Jerman sama sekali tidak memungut biaya. Tapi tentu saja kita harus memiliki sumber pendanaan untuk biaya hidup.
DAAD (www.daad.de) adalah lembaga Jerman yang menyediakan informasi pendidikan dan juga informasi beasiswa di Jerman. Kantornya di Jakarta berlokasi di Gedung Sumitmas II, Jl.Jendral Sudirman, di depan Depdikbud. Mereka memiliki program beasiswa setiap tahun. Skim beasiswa yang disediakan DAAD mencakup S2, S3, sandwich program, riset 3-6 bulan, dan juga postdocotoral research. Tiket pesawat disediakan. Kalau dapat beasiswa dari DAAD, bisa modal dengkul. Ada pula beasiswa dari industri seperti dari Siemens besarnya 1200 DM. Tidak harus pegawai negeri.

Untuk belajar di Jerman tidak harus melalui DAAD. Kalau untuk S3, setiap mahasiswa S3 pasti mendapatkan beasiswa. Jadi bisa saja setelah Anda lulus S2, Anda langsung mencari universitas di Jerman yang kebetulan ada profesor yang bidangnya sama dengan bidang peminatan Anda, dan melamar. Tapi tentu Anda akan butuh mencukupi sendiri biaya hidup 1 bulan dan tiket pesawat ke Jerman.

Untungnya, berbeda seperti di AS dan Kanada, biasanya di Jerman, Belanda, Austria, Belgia dan Switzerland, tidak memiliki kewajiban jadi teaching assistant atau research assistant. Kalaupun ada biasanya cuma 1 session tutorial per minggu. Tidak berat sama sekali. Kalaupun kita disuruh menulis paper, itu juga biasanya untuk kepentingan kita juga. Gaji (atau katakanlah beasiswa) kita cukup sekali untuk hidup.

Jangan lupa kontak profesornya dahulu (sama dengan cara yang di AS). Kirimkan pula statement of purpose dan research plannya. Kalau perlu diskusikan dahulu research plannya (biar cocok dengan pembimbingnya) sebelum mendaftar ke universitasnya.

Isi research plan itu standar-standar saja: latar belakang masalah, problem, metodologi penelitan, bagaimana kamu kira-kira akan memecahkan masalah tersebut, dll. Garis besarnya saja, asal bisa memberikan gambaran apa yang akan Anda teliti.

Saya sarankan untuk mengambil kursus bahasa Jerman di Goethe Institute, karena paling sedikit ada 3 negara yang menyediakan beasiswa, menggunakan bahasa Jerman, yakni Jerman, Switzerland dan Austria. Peluang beasiswa menjadi meningkat. Sudah begitu, kalau sudah bisa Jerman, belajar bahasa Belanda jadi gampang sekali.

Sebenarnya kalau Anda menempuh S3, dalam realitanya tidak harus menggunakan bahasa Jerman saat berdiskusi dengan peer atau profesor. Hal ini karena tidak banyak orang yang mau mengikuti program S3, dan biasanya universitas itu yang ‘membutuhkan’ mahasiswa S3. Cuma, untuk meningkatkan probabilitas mendapatkan beasiswa, kenapa tidak belajar bahasa Jerman?

4. Belanda
Sama persis dengan Jerman, hanya saja nama lembaga penyalur informasi pendidikannya adalah Netherlands Education Center (NEC). Di Jakarta lokasinya di Gedung Patra Jl.Gatot Subroto, Kuningan. Kantornya bersebelahan dengan kantor kamar dagang Belanda di Indonesia.
Sekolah di Belanda juga gratis, tapi yang international programme biasanya tidak gratis. Pemerintah Belanda juga menyediakan skim beasiswa yang saingannya lumayan banyak, namanya beasiswa TALIS.

NEC juga menyediakan informasi beasiswa tahunan yang disediakan langsung oleh universitas-universitas di Belanda. Selain itu ada juga program-program internasional yang berbahasa Inggris. Sayangnya untuk level S2 (Drs, Ir.), beasiswa kelas-kelas berbahasa Inggris itu biasanya cuma 1/2 uang tution fee dan sulit mendapatkannya.
Untuk S3, gratis dan digaji, sama seperti Jerman.

5. Austria & Swiss
Secara umum sama seperti Jerman. Tiap tahun kedutaan Austria dan Switzerland juga menyediakan beasiswa, namun berbeda dengan Belanda dan Jerman, mereka tidak menyediakan beasiswa S2 sama sekali. Yang mungkin adalah gelar S2 dari Indonesia, tapi sandwich di sana (penelitian 6 bulan - 1 tahun). Tapi tentu masih mendapat sertifikat. Selain itu tentunya beasiswa dari kedutaan Austria dan Switzerland juga ada yang untuk S3. Semuanya lengkap dengan tiket pesawat dan ongkos hidup. Practically bisa dengan modal dengkul kalau dapat beasiswanya.

Saat interview di kedutaan biasanya akan ditanya hal-hal yang sama seperti dalam statement of purpose dan research plan. Di kedutaan Swiss juga ada test bahasa, sekedar untuk menguji saja, toh nanti juga disekolahkan di sekolah bahasa di Swiss sebelum masuk kuliah. Tergantung Anda memilih sekolah di mana, ada universitas di Swiss yang berbahasa Perancis, seperti misalnya di Geneva. Tapi kalau di sebelah utara dan timur, umumnya berbahasa Jerman.
Anda juga bisa daftar langsung ke universitas yang bersangkutan, terutama untuk program S3, dengan cara sama seperti Jerman & Belanda. Gratis dan digaji juga.

6. Jepang
Sebenarnya kalau sampai di Jepang sana, cukup banyak beasiswa, namun sayangnya tidak banyak yang full membiayai uang kuliah dan biaya hidup. Bahkan untuk S3 saja juga harus bayar.

Pemerintah Jepang menyediakan juga beasiswa Monbusho kepada orang-orang Indonesia. Ada dua jenis beasiswa Mombusho. Yang pertama pelamar harus pegawai negeri atau dosen. Melalui jalur ini, pelamar kalau lolos seleksi akan dicarikan pembimbing/profesor yang cocok sesuai minat. Sedangkan yang satu lagi sang pelamar harus aktif mencari sang profesor, dan menanyakan apakah si profesor tersebut bersedia menjadi pembimbing riset pelamar. 7. Singapura
Singapura memiliki dua universitas ‘negeri’, yakni National University of Singapore (NUS), dan yang lebih baru yakni Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Memang harus diakui bahwa NUS bukan sekolah ‘bule’ (meskipun banyak pengajarnya dari manca negara), tapi peringkat NUS selalu berada di top 10 universitas di Asia, dan selalu diatas seluruh universitas Australia. Meskipun untuk orang awam seolah-olah tidak membanggakan (karena bukan sekolah bule), namun reputasi internasional NUS memudahkan mahasiswanya dan lulusannya untuk melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi lagi.

Beasiswa yang disediakan oleh pemerintah Singapura melalui kedua universitas itu ada yang berbasis coursework (sulit masuknya, saingannya ketat dari seluruh ASEAN), dan ada lagi yang berbasis riset S2/S3 (lebih mudah). Untuk mendapatkan beasiswa berbasis riset, dalam formulir pendaftaran (download dari www.nus.edu.sg atau www.ntu.edu.sg) juga lampirkan proposal riset (research plan). Bahkan kadang-kadang bisa tanpa proposal riset, dengan cara bercakap-cakap dengan profesornya terlebih dahulu (via e-mail) dan meminta sang profesor memberikan alternatif research plan. Pokoknya asal menunjukkan minat melakukan penelitian.

Beasiswa (gaji) bulanan yang diterima adalah SG$1400, tanpa tiket pesawat (kecuali yang ASEAN scholarship). Biaya hidup bulanan (hidup enak) sekitar SG$1000, jadi masih bisa menabung SG$400 per bulannya.

8. Australia & Inggris
Seperti kita ketahui Australia menyediakan beasiswa tahunan AusAID yang saingannya berjibun. Pusat informasi pendidikan Australia adalah IDP, berlokasi di Jl.Rasuna Said.
Sedangkan Inggris juga menyediakan beasiswa S2 dan S3 tahunan (British Chivening) yang pelamarnya banyak sekali. Informasi tersebut bisa didapatkan di British Council, Widjojo Centre. Beasiswa diberikan kepada 80% pegawai negeri dan 20% swasta.
Perlu diberitahukan juga bahwa di British Council tersebut juga sering ada pengumuman beasiswa untuk S2/S3, hanya saja sayangnya hampir semua beasiswa tersebut parsial (misalnya 1/2 uang tuition).

Australia dan Inggris adalah negara-negara yang terkenal pelit dalam soal beasiswa, mentang-mentang pakai bahasa Inggris. Kasarnya, mereka mengkomersilkan pendidikan. Bahkan untuk S3, harus bayar. Kalaupun ada program beasiswa, saingannya banyak sekali.

Tapi jangan putus asa. Kalau ada kemauan, maka ada jalan. Beberapa universitas di Australia, menyalurkan beasiswa riset dari pemerintah Australia untuk jenjang S2/S3 terbatas kepada pelamar internasional (bukan AusAID), termasuk biaya hidup (tanpa tiket pesawat dan settlement cost). Hanya saja saingannya lumayan banyak, meskipun tidak seketat AusAID. Dalam formulir pendaftaran yang biasanya bisa didownload langsung dari website universitas, jangan lupa cantumkan statement of purpose dan research plan.

Tapi saya juga pernah ditawari untuk mengajar program bachelor di Australia (mungkin saat itu mereka sedang kekurangan dosen), sekaligus mengambil program S3. Jadi ada kans untuk mengajar atau jadi tenaga peneliti, sekaligus mengambil S3. Tinggal pintar-pintarnya kita saja membujuk mereka agar mau mengambil kita. Manfaatkan kunjungan-kunjungan lembaga pendidikan Australia ke Indonesia untuk merekrut mahasiswa S1, untuk mencari kemungkinan S3 sekaligus bekerja di universitas itu.
Kemudian University of Cambridge (www.cambridge.ac.uk) juga menyediakan beasiswa lepasan tanpa ikatan dinas.

Google has published information from Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2009, which aims to promote women to results in the field of computers and technology as well as active role models and leaders. Scholarships are open to students that his last year bachelor’s degree or enrolled in master’s or doctoral degree (or equivalent) in 2009/2010.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients, selected from the finalists, will each receive a €5,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2009/2010 academic year.

In June 2009, all finalists will be invited to visit Google’s European Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.

UTS: Engineering offers scholarships to international students for its masters by coursework programs. Each scholarship will be awarded based solely on academic results achieved by the applicant in their undergraduate degree.

The next intake will be for Autumn Semester 2009. Applications close 8 December 2008.

Tips Mendapatkan Beasiswa Monbusho

Beasiswa ini dinamakan Monbusho Research Student, sebab pada dasarnya beasiswa diberikan untuk program research student (program non gelar selama 1.5 atau 2 tahun saja, tergantung Monbusho recommended by Embassy atau recommended by University). Jadi penerima beasiswa ini pada awalnya diberikan hanya untuk 1.5 th atau 2 th buat Research Student (program Non Gelar). Tetapi selama 1.5 th atau 2 th itu jika penerima beasiswa bisa masuk program S2 ataupun S3, beasiswa akan diperpanjang dan statusnya jadi beasiswa S2 atau beasiswa S3.

Untuk mendapatkan beasiswa monbusho research student ini ada 2 macam :

Monbusho Recommended by Embassy (di Indonesia, dikenal dengan nama Monbusho G to G)
Monbusho Recommended by University (di Indonesia, dikenal dengan nama Monbusho U to U)untuk selanjutnya sebut aja beasiswa Monbusho G to G dan Monbusho U to U (tapi ingat istilah ini hanya ada di Indonesia).

Cara untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho Research Student :

Untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho G to G

untuk mendapatkan beasiswa ini, pelamar bisa menghubungi Kedutaan Besar Jepang di Jakarta. Tetapi syarat mutlak yang mesti dipenuhi adalah bahwa pelamar harus statusnya PNS (pegawai Negeri Sipil) atau karyawan BUMN. Selain tersebut tidak bisa mendaftar. Pihak kedutaan besar Jepang telah bekerja sama dengan Pemerintah Indonesia (dalam hal ini pemerintah Indonesia memohon kepada pihak Kedutaan Jepang agar pelamar hanya diperbolehkan khusus untuk PNS atau karyawan BUMN). Sebenarnya Pihak Monbusho (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture JAPAN) tidak mensyaratkandemikian, hanya pemerintah Indonesia saja yang menginginkannya. Jadi kita tidak menjumpai syarat-syarat demikian di berbagai negara lain seperti : China, Korea, Malaysia. Thailand, Philipina, Perancis, Kroasia, German, USA, Inggris, Mesir, Iran dll.Persyaratan lain, sistem seleksi diatur oleh masing-masing Kedutaan Besar Jepang di negara yang bersangkutan. Beasiswa Monbusho G to G ini untuk Indonesia quotanya sekitar 50 orang, dan biasanya jatah buat PNS dari Departemen Pendidikan (dalam hal inidosen) sekitar 35 orang dan 15 orang dari Departemen lain atau dari BUMN. Bagi yang berhasil lulus atau berhasil mendapatkan beasiswa ini, maka penerima akan mendapatkan beasiswa research student selama jangka waktu 2 tahun (non gelar).

Dalam masa research student tersebut di universitas jepang yang dipilihnya, mereka sekolah bahasa jepang, dan persiapan untuk ujian masuk S2 bagi yang ingin melanjutkan program S2 dan ujian masuk S3 bagi yang ingin melanjutkan program S3. Ujian masuk universitas diatur oleh masing-masing universitas yang dipilih. Ada universitas jepang yang tiap setengah tahun ngadakan ujian masuk, ada juga setiap tahun sekali ujian masuknya. Jika dalam tahun pertama atau pertengahan tahun pertama saudara lulus ujian masuk S2 atau S3 maka status beasiswa research student yang masa waktunya masih lebih akan otomatis di cancel (dihentikan) dan saudara di daftar sebagai penerima beasiswa S2 (dua tahun lagi, buat yang akan masuk S2) dan S3 (tiga tahun lagi, buat yang akan masuk S3). Tetapi jika dalam masa research student tsb saudara gagal masuk ujian pertama,maka saudara bisa mengikuti ujian masuk ke dua dan ketiga sampai masa research habis. Jika sampai masa research student habis dan saudara belum bisa masuk ujian, maka saudara di pulangkan. Untuk yang masuk S2, setelah saudara menyelesaikan program Master, dan jika saudara berkeinginan untuk melanjutkan program S3 makasaudara bisa memperpanjang beasiswa itu untuk masuk program S3 (dan beasiswa akan diperpanjang lagi 3 tahun ke depan).

Untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho U to U

Bagi yang bukan PNS atau karyawan BUMN, yang sudah jelas-jelas nggak bisa ikut Monbusho G to G, jangan kuatir ada cara lain untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho yaitu beasiswa Monbusho U to U (tapi ini istilah di Indonesia saja) untuk istilah di Jepangnya, Monbusho Recommended by University (artinya universitas Jepang merekomendasikan calon ke Monbusho). Sebenarnya rekomendation diberikan oleh Professor Jepang yang diteruskan ke Universitasnya dan Universitas merekomendasikan ke Monbusho.

Lalu bagaimana cara untuk mendapatkannya ?

Kontak salah satu Professor Jepang yang sesuai bidang anda, dan mulailah kenalan-kenalan baik lewat e-mail, surat pos, Facsimile, maupun telepon. Pertama katakan bahwa saudara tertarik/interest dengan research topik di lab. Profesor tersebut, dan katakan juga bahwa saudara pengen sekali gabung dengan lab. tsb untuk melanjutkan study master atau doktor. Dalam surat perkenalan pertama itu sedapat mungkin saudara menyertakan CV, ringkasan riset yang pernah saudara kerjakan dan rencana riset/tema riset yang ingin saudara lakukan. Setelah menjalin beberapa kali kontak dengan Professor (artinya kalau Professor sudah OK untuk menerima saudara) maka tanyakan ada kemungkinan dia mencalonkan (merekomendasikan ) orang asing untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho nggak. Saat saudara tanya tentang beasiswa Monbusho ke Professor tersebut, biasanya saudara di anjurkan untuk mengikuti Monbusho yang lewat Embassy di negara masing-masing, setelah saudara berhasil, saudara bisa ngontak Professor tersebut lagi untuk membimbing saudara. Memang jawaban seperti diatas sering sekali diucapkan oleh Professor Jepang.

Ada kemungkinan bahwa Professor sibuk dan nggak mau ngurus (sebab untuk apply monbusho recommended by university, Professor lah yang sibuk sekali mulai dari ngambil application ke Foreign Student Office di Universitasnya, terus Professor mengirimkan application itu ke calon mahasiswa, dan setelah diisi oleh calon mahasiswa, terus Professor memberikan application itu ke Foreign Student Office lagi setelah dia ngasih rekomendasi). Kemungkinan lainnya adalah bahwa Professor itu tidak tahu bagaimana cara apply Monbusho recommended by University, mereka hanya tahu cuman dari Embassy saja. Dalam hal ini Saudara harus dengan hati-hati menjelaskan bahwa Professor punya hak untuk merekomendasikan mahasiswa asing untuk mendapatkan beasiswa Monbusho dan bisa ditanyakan ke Foreign Student Office Universitasnya.

Dalam mengontak Professor Jepang usahakan Professor yang ada di universitas negeri. Universitas negeri dapat jatah beasiswa Monbusho besar sekali. Universitas-universitas negeri yang terkenal misalnya :

Tidak jarang juga Professor negeri yang tidak tahu tentang beasiswa Monbusho recommended by University.

Surat perkenalan pertama ke Professor Jepang kadang-kadang tidak di jawab. Banyak kemungkinannya, antara lain Professor tersebut tidak bagus Englishnya sehingga untuk membalas dalam bahasa Inggris dia butuh waktu lama, padahal dia sibuk sekali.Kemungkinan lain di lab. Professor tersebut udah penuh, artinya tidak bisa menampung lagi mahasiswa baru. Tapi jangan kuatir masih ada ribuan Professor-professor yang tersebar di seluruh Universitas di Jepang, silahkan saudara mencoba untuk kontak keProfessor lainnya.

Cara yang terbagus adalah jika kenalan dengan Professor Jepang dilakukan pada saat ketemu di Conference, Scientific meeting, Kunjungan-kunjungan lab, atau pas ada kerja sama sehingga Professor Jepang datang ke Indonesia. Kalau ada kesempatan sepertiitu, bisa saudara manfaatkan sebaik-baiknya.Jika semuanya udah OK, dalam arti Professor sanggup menguruskan beasiswa Monbusho, maka Professor lah yang sibuk. Mulai dari ngambil application di Foreign Student Office di Universitasnya, terus ngirim application itu ke saudara (setelah saudara isi lengkap, saudara diharapkan ngembalikan ke Professor lagi), terus Professor ngembalikan lagi application yang sudah saudara isi lengkap ke Foreign Student Office dengan Professor tsb menyertakan rekomendasi bahwa saudara diterima di lab-nya.

Akhirnya Foreign Student Office merekomendasikan candidate ke Monbusho. Setelah diproses oleh Monbusho hasil pengumumannya di beritahukan ke Universitas, dan Universitas memberitahu ke Professor bahwa calon yang direkomendasikan oleh Professor tsb berhasil. Barusan setelah itu Professor memberi tahu saudara. Segala urusan mengenai kedatangan dan penjemputan saudara di urus oleh Professor.

Setelah dapat pemberitahuan bahwa saudara dinyatakan sukses sebagai penerima beasiswa Monbusho, saudara akan mendapatkan sertifikat pernyataan bahwa saudara berhak menerima beasiswa Monbusho untuk research student selama 1.5 tahun. Setelah mendapatkan beasiswa research student, maka proses berikutnya sama persis dengan beasiswa Monbusho G to G. Hanya waktu research student beasiswa monbusho U to U cuman 1.5 tahun.

Dalam masa research student tersebut saudara harus belajar bahasa jepang, dan persiapan untuk ujian masuk S2 bagi yang ingin melanjutkan program S2 dan ujian masuk S3 bagi yang ingin melanjutkan program S3. Ujian masuk universitas diatur oleh masing-masing universitas yang dipilih. Ada universitas jepang yang tiap setengah tahun ngadakan ujian masuk, ada juga setiap tahun sekali ujian masuknya. Jika dalam tahun pertama atau pertengahan tahun pertama saudara lulus ujian masuk S2 atau S3 maka status beasiswa research student yang masa waktunya masih lebih akan otomatis dicancel (dihentikan) dan saudara di daftar sebagai penerima beasiswa S2 (dua tahun lagi, buat yang akan masuk S2) dan S3 (tiga tahun lagi, buat yang akan masuk S3). Tetapi jika dalam masa research student tsb saudara gagal masuk ujian pertama, makasaudara bisa mengikuti ujian masuk ke dua dan ketiga sampai masa research habis. Jika sampai masa research student habis dan saudara belum bisa masuk ujian, maka saudara di pulangkan. Untuk yang masuk S2, setelah saudara menyelesaikan program Master, danjika saudara berkeinginan untuk melanjutkan program S3 maka saudara bisa memperpanjang beasiswa itu untuk masuk program S3 (dan beasiswa akan diperpanjang lagi 3 tahun ke depan).Nah kesempatan ini, yang bisa di dapat oleh setiap orang tanpa kecuali (tidak harus PNS ataupun karyawan BUMN). Disamping tidak ada quota kita bisa meminta rekomendasi dari berbagai pilihan banyak Professor-Professor Jepang yang tersebar di seluruh universitas Jepang. Dan prosedur beasiswa ini tidak ada hubungannya dengan Kedutaan Jepang di Indonesia. Hanya saja jika saudara diterima beasiswa ini pihak kedutaan jepang mengharapkan saudara untuk melapor bahwa saudara di terima beasiswa monbusho.

Beasiswa Monbusho recommended by university di TOKYO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (TIT) Ini adalah sebagai contoh cara apply beasiswa Monbusho U to U di TIT. Formulir beasiswa monbusho U to U ini bisa di dapat di Foreign Student Office TIT sekitar bulan Desember, tetapi yang berhak mengambil hanya Professor TIT saja, mahasiswa tidak diperbolehkan. Formulir harus diserahkan ke Foreign Student Office TIT palinglambat 31 Maret, setelah formulir diisi lengkap oleh applicant dan sudah di kasih rekomendasi oleh Professor TIT. Penyerahan formulir ke Foreign Student Office hanya bisa dilakukan oleh Professor TIT.

Aplicant tidak diperbolehkan menyerahkan application langsung. Pihak Foreign Student Office TIT akan merekomendasikan calon ke Monbusho sekitar pertengahan April. Monbusho akan menyeleksi dan menginformasikan ke Pihak Foreign Student Office TIT pada pertengahan Agustus. Awal Oktober calon mahasiswa diharapkankedatangannya ke Jepang. Semua urusan eligibility untuk pengurusan VISA, tiket pesawat ke Jepang diurus semua oleh Foreign Student Office TIT. Untuk universitas lain seperti The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University dll, deadline penyerahan application, pengumuman serta tata caranya berbeda dengan TIT. Setiap universitas punya aturan yang berbeda-beda.

Perbedaan Beasiswa Monbusho G to G dengan Monbusho U to U:

Saat pengajuan (saat apply), untuk Monbusho G to G, pengajuannya di Kedutaan Jepang (Jakarta), proses seleksi di atur oleh pihak kedutaan Jepang. Syarat utamanya adalah harus PNS atau karyawan BUMN. Untuk Monbusho U to U, pengajuannya ke Professor Jepang dan diteruskan ke Universitas Jepang. Tidak ada persyaratan khusus untuk mendapatkan beasiswa ini (tidak harus PNS atau karywana BUMN).
Seleksi, Untuk Monbusho G to G, seleksi diadakan oleh kedutaan Jepang. seleksi tahap pertama penyeleksian dari dokumen-dokumen yang diserahkan pada saat aply, seleksi berikutnya adalah wawancara. Untuk Monbusho U to U, tidak ada sistem seleksi, jika Professorsudah OK (dalam arti ngasih rekomendasi), maka universitas akan melanjutkan untuk merekomendasikan ke Monbusho. Tetapi jika di universitas tsb terlalu banyak permintaan dari Professor (jumlah Professor yang apply banyak) maka universitas mengadakan seleksi, biasanya seleksi di dasarkan pada kesenioritasan Professor. Untuk itu, usahakan nyari Professor yang senior, yang sudah Full Professor bukan yang Associate Professor. Hal ini untuk menjaga kemungkinan adanya kejadian diatas.
Jangka waktu research student, Untuk Monbusho G to G , jangka waktu beasiswa research student adalah 2 tahunUntuk Monbusho U to U , jangka waktu beasiswa research student adalah 1.5 tahun.
Pengurusan keberangkatan ke Jepang, Untuk Monbusho G to G, pengurusan keberangkatan ke Jepang di urus atau dibantu oleh pihak kedutaan Jepang. Kedatangan di Jepang di jemput dan diatur oleh AIEJ (Association International Education Japan). Untuk Monbusho U to U, pengurusan keberangkatan ke Jepang di urus sendiri, tidak ada hubungan dengan kedutaan Jepang, hanya pihak kedutaan Jepang meminta laporan data tentang calon sebelum keberangkatan. Dan kedatangan di Jepang di jemput atau diurus oleh Professornya.

Persamaan Beasiswa Monbusho G to G dengan Monbusho U to U:

Setelah sampai di Universitas Jepang, semua sama. Hak-hak yang diperoleh oleh penerima beasiswa monbusho G to G dengan hak yang diterima oleh penerima beasiswa monbusho U to U adalah sama. Hak-haknya antara lain :

Tiket pesawat pulang - pergi dari negara asal ke Jepang.
Uang kedatangan pertama kali di Jepang sebesar 25.000 yen.
Uang beasiswa perbulan 185.500 yen.
Bebas biaya ujian masuk universitas, matrikulasi dan biaya kuliah.
Tunjangan bagi yang tinggal di apartemenTunjangan untuk scientific meeting, travellling.
Perpanjangan beasiswa dari research student status ke program master atau doktor, dan juga perpanjangan beasiswa dari master ke doktor.

Apa itu IELTS? Tips dan Trik

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) muncul karena adanya kebutuhan, antara lain pada universitas, sekolah, pemerintahan dan perusahaan, akan sebuah tes Bahasa Inggris yang diakui secara internasional. Sekarang ini, nilai IELTS merupakan syarat untuk murid asing yang akan masuk sekolah, akademi atau universitas di banyak negara. Kebanyakan negara yang menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sekarang mewajibkan nilai IELTS tertentu untuk orang-orang yang sedang mengambil visa kerja, ijin tinggal atau kewarganegaraan.

IELTS sekarang telah menjadi suatu bisnis besar. Tiap minggu, di seluruh dunia, puluhan ribu orang mengikuti tes tersebut. Tiap-tiap tes mempunyai tujuan yang beragam baik pendidikan maupun perpindahan negara tinggal. Wajarlah bila kemudian bermunculan kursus-kursus yang bertujuan untuk mempersiapkan murid untuk tes IELTS. Kualitas dari kursus persiapan IELTS ini sangat variatif dari satu sekolah ke sekolah yang lain, namun ada beberapa strategi sederhana yang selalu ada bahkan dalam sebuah kursus persiapan IELTS yang paling sederhana sekalipun. Walaupun agak sulit untuk mempelajari semua tips dan strategi tes yang dibutuhkan (beberapa kursus menawarkan durasi 100 jam), artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran besar strategi umum yang harus diketahui oleh seorang calon peserta tes, sebelum ia mengikuti tes tersebut.

Tes IELTS memiliki 4 komponen: mendengar atau listening (30 menit ), membaca atau reading (1 jam), menulis atau writing (1 jam) dan berbicara atau speaking (12-15 menit). Secara keseluruhan, tes IELTS membutuhkan waktu sekitar 3 jam.

Ada dua macam modul tes IELTS. Modul General training (GT) adalah modul tes yang digunakan untuk keperluan visa atau untuk masuk ke sekolah tingkat SMA di luar negeri. Modul akademik adalah modul yang digunakan untuk masuk ke tingkat universitas. Bagian listening dan speaking dari kedua modul tersebut hampir sama, sedangkan bagian writing dan reading untuk modul GT lebih sederhana dibandingkan dengan modul akademik. Dalam artikel ini, modul akademik akan dijelaskan lebih mendalam. Pertama, ada beberapa strategi umum yang bisa digunakan untuk seluruh bagian tes.

Strategi Umum
Bacalah atau dengarkanlah instruksi dengan seksama. Kebanyakan peserta tes adalah murid sekolah atau lulusan perguruan tinggi. Mereka sudah seringkali mengikuti berbagai macam tes dan merasa bahwa membaca instruksi pada sebuah tes adalah sia-sia, karena toh instruksi yang mereka temui selama ini hampir selalu sama. Ini adalah suatu kesalahan besar dalam mengikuti tes IELTS. Singkatnya, kandidat yang tidak mengikuti instruksi dengan benar selalu memberikan jawaban yang salah. Ada berbagai macam instruksi yang diberikan dalam ke empat komponen tes, termasuk ‘jawab dengan menggunakan tidak lebih dari 3 kata’ atau ‘jawab dengan menggunakan frase singkat’. Pada instruksi yang pertama tadi, jawaban yang menggunakan 4 kata, meskipun inti dari jawaban tersebut benar, akan tetap dianggap salah. Pada instruksi yang kedua, jawaban berupa sebuah kalimat lengkap juga akan dianggap salah.

Atur waktu anda. Anda harus sadar akan waktu dan sadar akan posisi anda dalam tes. Pada bagian reading, anda punya waktu satu jam untuk menyelesaikan 3 bagian, maka jangan menghabiskan lebih dari 20 menit untuk tiap bagian. Pada bagian writing, pastikan bahwa anda tidak menghabiskan lebih dari 20 menit untuk tugas bagian pertama, dan sisakan 40 menit untuk tugas bagian kedua yang lebih penting.

Jangan panik. Kalau menurut anda ada bagian dari tes ini yang sulit, kemungkinan besar, puluhan ribu orang di seluruh dunia yang mengikuti tes inipun berpikiran sama. Bandscore atau nilai anda akan dihitung sesudah hasil dari seluruh dunia dikumpulkan dan, untuk tes yang lebih sulit, jumlah jawaban benar yg diperlukan akan lebih sedikit untuk mencapai bandscore tertentu. Di saat melaksanakan tes, kalau anda merasa kurang berhasil di satu bagian tes, berusahalah untuk melupakannya dan berkonsentrasilah untuk bagian berikutnya. Tidak ada gunanya memikirkan bagian listening ketika anda sedang mengerjakan bagian reading.
Ada satu atau dua tips dan strategi untuk membantu anda menghadapi masing-masing bagian dari tes.

Orang sering kali cemas mengahdapi bagian ini karena memikirkan bahwa mereka hanya punya satu kali kesempatan, berbeda dengan bagian reading dan writing di mana mereka bisa membaca ulang tulisan atau bacaan ang mereka hadapi. Tidak ada kesempatan kedua untuk mendengarkan rekaman tes. Jadi, kalau anda ketinggalan, hilanglah selamanya! Itulah sebabnya persiapan sebelum mendengar adalah kunci agar berhasil dalam bagian ini.

Gunakan waktu anda dengan bijak. Anda diberikan waktu sekitar 30 detik untuk membaca tiap bagian sebelum rekaman dimulai, dan 30 detik lagi untuk memeriksa jawaban dari tiap bagian sesudah rekaman selesai. Jangan sia-siakan waktu ini. Gunakan waktu sebelum mendengar untuk membaca instruksi, membaca pertanyaan dan, yang juga sangat penting, memprediksi. Prediksikan jenis jawaban apa yang kira-kira diminta. Prediksikan apa yang akan anda dengar, siapa yang akan berbicara, dimana mereka berbicara dan mengapa mereka berbicara. Prediksikan bentuk kata (kata benda, kerja, sifat atau keterangan), atau prediksikan berdasarkan pengetahuan kamu dan petunjuk lain yang diberikan dalam pertanyaan. Pada akhir tiap bagian, gunakan waktu 30 detik yang diberikan untuk melihat apakah prediksi anda benar, mengisi kotak jawaban yang masih kosong (jangan pernah membiarkan jawaban kosong dalam IELTS), ejaan, huruf besar dan grammar.

Menggaris bawah. Anda perlu menggaris bawahi kata2 penting dalam kalimat pertanyaan. Proses menggarisbawahi akan membantu anda untuk mendengar dan mempersiapkan anda, meski mungkin tanpa anda sadari, sehingga anda bisa mengidentifikasikan kata-kata tersebut pada saat diucapkan dalam suatu percakapan.

Pindahkan jawaban dengan hati-hati. Pada akhir tes listening, anda akan diberikan waktu 10 menit untuk memindahkan jawaban anda ke lembar jawaban. Lakukan ini dengan hati-hati. Gunakan kesempatan ini untuk memeriksa ejaan, grammar dan menebak jawaban yang belum terjawab.

Reading
Sebuah pertanyaan yang sulit mempunyai bobot nilai yang sama dengan pertanyaan yang mudah. Jadi, jangan buang waktu untuk pertanyaan yang menjebak. Tinggalkan saja, kerjakan yang lebih mudah dulu. Anda bisa kembali lagi untuk menghadapi pertanyaan sulit itu apabila masih ada waktu.

Baca instruksi dan pertanyaan. Selagi anda membaca pertanyaan, garisbawahi kata-kata kunci dan coba pikirkan persamaan kata atau kata-kata lain yang berhubungan. Kata-kata yang ada dalam bacaan biasanya merupakan paraphrase atau kata-kata dan bentuk kalimat lain dari pertanyaan tersebut.

Tergantung dari bentuk pertanyaan, gunakan teknik membaca cepat dan membaca sepintas. Membaca dengan cepat (scanning) yaitu menggerakkan mata anda ke atas ke bawah, ke kiri dan ke kanan teks (bukan membaca tiap baris) untuk mencari sebuah kata atau frase atau suatu informasi yang spesifik. Bayangkan saat kita sedang mencari nama dalam buku telpon. Membaca sepintas (skimming) adalah membaca tiap baris kalimat dengan cepat, dengan mengabaikan kata-kata grammar dan kata-kata yang kita tidak mengerti.

Writing
Di bagian pertama, anda diharapkan untuk mendeskripsikan sebuah grafik, tabel, proses atau kombinasi dari ketiganya, dalam waktu 20 menit. Di bagian kedua, anda punya waktu 40 menit untuk menulis sebuah essay akademis sepanjang 250 kata. Ingat waktu. Bagian kedua lebih panjang dan lebih penting sehingga memerlukan waktu 40 menit. Jadi pastikan bahwa anda bergerak sesuai dengan waktu.

Bagian pertama adalah tentang mendeskripsikan dan membandingkan data. Anda tidak perlu membuang-buang waktu menuliskan penyebab dan alasan untuk data atau pergerakan grafik berdasarkan perkiraan anda. Cukup gambarkan apa yang terlihat di grafik tersebut. Anda harus selalu mencoba untuk membandingkan data yang anda lihat, bukan hanya sekedar menuliskan informasi yang ada di depan anda. Berhati-hatilah untuk membuat catatan mengenai tanggal dan waktu dalam data, dan pastikan anda menggunakan tenses yang benar.

Pada bagian kedua, anda harus menganalisa pertanyaan dengan seksama, mengumpulkan ide, lalu pikirkan struktur paragraf yang anda akan buat. Semua ini harus dilakukan sebelum anda mulai menulis. Jangan keluar dari topik yang diminta dan pastikan bahwa anda menyisakan 5 menit di akhir untuk memeriksa pekerjaan anda. Apabila anda telah memiliki kesadaran mengenai kelemahan anda dalam menulis, maka anda dapat mengunakan waktu ini untuk memeriksa kembali pekerjaan anda secara effektif.

Penguji IELTS akan melihat 4 aspek ketika ia menilai tulisan anda. Isi (apakah anda telah menjawab pertanyaan?), grammar (apakah grammar anda sudah tepat? apakah anda menggunakan struktur yang bervariasi?), kosa kata (apakah kosa kata yang digunakan tepat dan cocok, apakah penulisannya benar, dan apakah kosa kata yang digunakan bervariasi?), dan kohesi (apakah essay anda mempunyai struktur yang baik? apakah anda sudah menggunakan kata penghubung secara efektif?)

Keberhasilan dalam tes menulis memerlukan latihan. Latihan tes menulis sangatlah perlu karena anda akan dapat belajar banyak dari kesalahan yang anda buat. Kalau anda cukup beruntung untuk memiliki seorang guru yang bisa membantu anda, pastikan bawa anda menganalisa kembali hasil koreksi yang dibuat oleh guru anda. Dan jangan buat kesalahan yang sama di latihan menulis berikutnya.

Pada bagian kedua dari tes, cobalah untuk memberikan argumen yang seimbang. Kemukakan dua sisi argumen. Kalau anda diminta menuliskan pendapat anda, cobalah untuk menuliskan kedua sisi permasalahan sebelum anda mengemukakan pendapat anda yang sebenarnya.

Terakhir, tulislah dengan rapi dan jelas dan buatlah tanda perbaikan dengan mencoretkan garis melewati bagian yang salah. Jangan mencoret-coret. Tidak ada nilai untuk kerapian dan kebersihan, tapi tulisan yang kurang rapi bisa membuat suasana hati penguji menjadi tidak enak sehingga lebih besar kemungkinan ia akan memberikan nilai yang rendah untuk sebuah essay yang sebenarnya sudah lumayan!

Speaking
Keberhasilan dalam tes speaking berasal dari latihan dan rasa percaya diri. Rasa percaya diri adalah kunci, tapi seringklai bahwa rasa percaya ini baru muncul setelah banyak latihan. Ingat bahwa ini adalah tes berbicara, jadi berbicaralah sebanyak mungkin dan jangan hanya memberikan jawaban satu kata untuk satu pertanyaan. Pada bagian kedua, anda diharapkan untuk berbicara mengenai topik tertentu selama satu atau dua menit. Persiapkan dengan sebaiknya dengan menuliskan catatan sebanyak-banyaknya (kata-kata kunci yang nanti akan membantu anda). Ini akan berguna untuk meminimalkan resiko ‘otak kosong’ pada saat berbicara. Cobalah untuk terus berbicara selama dua menit penuh sampai penguji meminta anda untuk berhenti, ini akan menunjukan kemampuan anda dalam ‘berbicara terus’ dan akan menambah nilai anda dalam aspek kelancaran/kefasihan. Bagian pertama dan kedua adalah pertanyaan tentang diri anda dan topik-topik yang anda kenal baik, sedangkan bagian ketiga mengandung pertanyaan abstrak. Dengarkan dengan hati-hati pertanyaan yang diberikan, terutama di bagian ketiga dan tanggapi dengan baik. Jangan berbicara tentang diri anda di bagian ketiga.

Penguji akan memberi nilai berdasarkan 4 aspek dari kemampuan berbicara anda: kelancaran (kemampuan untuk terus berbicara), grammar (jenis dan ketepatan penggunaan), kosa kata (jenis dan ketepatan) dan pelafalan. Persiapkan diri dengan mempelajari grammar dan kosa kata tapi jangan terlalu memikirkan grammar ketika sedang menjalani tes, karena bila anda memikirkan bentuk grammar yang benar, nilai anda dalam hal kelancaran (fluency) pasti akan berkurang.

Hari tes: Persiapan terakhir
Tes IELTS adalah sebuah tes yang panjang dan melelahkan. Jadi, pastikan bahwa anda tidur yang cukup dan makan pagi yang cukup. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sarapan yang mengandung protein adalah yang paling baik sebelum ujian, sedangkan sarapan yang mengandung karbohidrat harus dihindari. Jangan minum kopi terlalu banyak! Jangan belajar cepat di menit-menit akhir menjelang hari ujian karena bila ternyata kamu menemukan hal baru yang belum kamu pelajari, kamu akan panik dan malah akan menjadi tidak produktif. Hal paling baik yang kamu lakukan di jam-jam terakhir sebelum ujian adalah berbicara dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris, atau baca ulang essay yang telah dikoreksi. Itu saja.

Datanglah lebih awal ke tempat tes agar anda punya cukup waktu seandainya jalanan macet. Kenali keadaan sekitar supaya anda merasa nyaman, dan cobalah melihat bagian dalam ruang tes supaya anda lebih tenang. Pada saat menunggu, bicaralah dalam Bahasa Inggris kepada kandidat tes lainnya supaya otak anda sudah masuk ke ‘English mode’.

Ingatlah bahwa tes IELTS ini bukan masalah terbesar. Kalau anda belum mendapatkan nilai yang anda perlukan, anda masih bisa mengulang lagi…dan lagi (paling tidak sampai uang anda habis!). Bersiaplah sebaik mungkin, berlatih sebanyak mungkin dan jalani tes selangkah demi selangkah, dengan demikian anda akan mendapatkan bandscore yang anda perlukan dalam waktu yang singkat.

Scholarships

A surprising number of students fail to see that identifying scholarships can be one of the most important parts of the successful scholarship search. There are thousands and thousands of scholarships available to students through internet searches and scholarship guides, but no one student will ever qualify for all of them. Even if one person were to qualify for all of them, most students probably would not have the time to apply for each and every one. For this reason, a well-defined scholarship search can be invaluable to students looking for some extra money to fund their education.

The best and cheapest way to run a scholarship search is to find a good, reliable scholarship search engine (like fastweb.com or srnexpress.com). Internet searches are free (do not ever pay a fee for scholarship searches, instead use that money towards your education), and unlike scholarship guides that simply list awards, even when they are sorted by subject matter, the internet can help you filter out awards for which you simply don't qualify. This means finding scholarships that are best suited to who you are, both as a student and as a person.

Also, be sure to meet the scholarship deadline. You may be the highest qualified student for a particular scholarship award, but if your application was submitted late, you most likely will not be considered as an eligible applicant. Know the application deadlines for each scholarship application you're filing, and turn them in on time.

Application Materials

Each scholarship has its own application. It is important to read the materials carefully and to understand what information is requested. Carefully typed applications make the best impression. Apply only for those scholarships for which you are eligible. It is highly doubtful that you will be awarded if you are not eligible for a scholarship.

Make sure to take the necessary steps to ensure your application gets where it needs to go. Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet and keep it on file. If your application goes astray, you can always reproduce it quickly. Make sure your name appears on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.

It would also be a good idea to send your application with Delivery Confirmation through the United States Post Office. If our office does not have your application on file, but you can provide proof of delivery by the deadline date, we will accept your copy as received on time.

Activities and Honors

List all relevant activities and honors, but be selective. If you have more activities than can fit in the space provided do not include the ones that are not significant; the two days you spent last spring on a community clean-up day, for instance.

Read the criteria for selection carefully to understand what the reviewers are looking for. For instance, the Presidential Scholarship looks for applicants who can show “leadership experience with [an] outstanding extracurricular record," so include your volunteer and community service activities, emphasizing those in which you took a leadership role.

Most importantly, your activities should represent your varied talents and passions outside the class room. The reviewers are trying to get a sense of who you are and what you believe in. Make sure your activities reflect that.

Letters of Recommendation
Choosing your recommenders

These letters are extremely important. Choose your recommenders carefully. Think of the letters as an integral part of a package that will present an accurate and complete picture of you and your qualifications. Scholarships such as the Regents' Scholarship considers not only academic achievement, but leadership ability and community service as well. While maybe one letter of recommendation should be from an academic source, at least one should address your leadership abilities and commitment to the community.

The ideal letter of recommendation

Your letters of recommendations should come from teachers or academic advisors who are familiar not only with your academic abilities, but with your personal interests and background and how those relate to your ability to carry out the program of study you wish to pursue. If the teacher or academic advisor is familiar with your extracurricular activities and leadership abilities, s/he should also incorporate that into the letter.

The letters should address the qualifications sought. Recommenders should address only those elements of your application on which they can comment confidently.

How to ask for a letter of recommendation

Start early. Discuss your plans with your recommenders now, before the application is even available. Let them know what you would like to study and why you want to apply for the scholarship. These discussions can help you clarify your goals and plans as well.

As soon as you have the application forms (applications for Incoming Freshmen Scholarships are available at your high school counselor's office, the Office of Recruitment Services and the Scholarship Office around early October), schedule a meeting with your recommender. Give your recommender a written description of the scholarship and a copy of your personal statement and proposed academic program. You may also want to provide a copy of your transcript and an autobiography or resume highlighting activities and honors. You should also give your recommenders appropriately addressed envelopes with postage, if necessary. Be sure to also give them plenty of time to write the letter, do not wait until the last minute.

You may also want to remind the recommender that it should include your full name with middle initial. You would be surprised on how many include only the first name of the student within the body of the letter.

The Personal Statement

The following section is an excerpt from the Yale University Undergraduate career Services' publication entitled Applying for Fellowships.

"The personal statement presents an opportunity for you to speak about yourself. Your essay should show that you have ideas and opinions, are able to think logically, and can express yourself clearly, with economy and elegance.

Clear writing is the result of clear thinking. The first and most important task is to decide what you want to say. This is a short essay. You must be highly selective. Consider carefully what you wish to impress upon the reader. Remember the nature of your audience. It is composed of people who are probably as intelligent as you are, well educated, and vastly experienced in this work. Do not try to fool or second guess your reader; you will seem silly if you do. Do not write in a cute, coy, or gimmicky style: selection committees have heard it all already. Do show that you have thought deeply and broadly about what you have learned in your academic career and what you hope to learn next.

When you have written a first draft, start the work of refining, simplifying, and polishing. Do you say exactly what you mean? Is any section, sentence, or word superfluous, ambiguous, or awkward?

Are your verbs strong and active? Have you removed unneeded qualifiers? Are you sure that each accomplishment and interest you mention supports one of your main ideas? Do not apologize. Do not misrepresent yourself. You are writing as an adult who wishes to join the community of scholars and other professionals. You must write as a peer and potential member of such a community.

Correctness and style are vital. Neatness counts. Check and check again your spelling, the agreement of verbs and persons, syntax. Your thoroughness demonstrates that you have learned and mastered this art and that your future teachers and colleagues will not be troubled with sloppy thinking or writing.

Ask several individuals whose judgment you respect to read and criticize a draft of your essay. Possible reviewers include faculty members, writing tutors, and friends who can assess how well your essay represents you."

A final note
Remember, in any application (for a job, grant, graduate school, etc.) the powers that be want to know three things: why is it important to you, why it is right for you and why you are right for it. Your application should be built around this message.

Tips meningkatkan kemampuan listening TOEFL

Bagi teman-teman yang merupakan scholarship hunter mungkin sudah sangat familiar sekali dengan yang namanya TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language). Dikoordinasikan dibawah ETS (http://www.ets.org/), TOEFL sekarang ini sudah menjadi syarat mutlak bagi seseorang yang ingin apply suatu beasiswa. Jika dibandingkan dengan saudaranya IELTS, penggunaan TOEFL sebagai salah satu ukuran standar kemampuan bahasa inggris sudah diakui dan umum dihampir semua negara.

Berkaitan dengan score TOEFL, biasanya tiap-tiap universitas memiliki standar yang berbeda-beda. Ada yang mensyaratkan cukup 500 (PTN dalam negeri), 550 (nilai min standar), 580 atau bisa juga diatas 600 terutama untuk program-program tertentu seperti MBA.

Terlepas dari berapa score TOEFL yang dibutuhkan, sebenarnya TOEFL ini termasuk ujian yang gampang-gampang susah untuk ditaklukkan. Bagi kebanyakan orang dari beberapa section ujian TOEFL, listening adalah section yang paling berat. Sepertinya susah sekali mencuri angka di section ini, beda halnya dengan section lain terutama structure dan reading. Untuk structure dan reading mungkin bisa kita antisipasi dengan banyak belajar dan latihan, persiapan satu dua bulan bisa dirasa cukup untuk mendapatkan score yang bagus disection ini. Bisa lah kita katakan, semakin banyak latihan dan persiapan maka semakin besar peluang untuk mencuri angka.

Tapi bagaimana dengan listening? sepertinya susah sekali, meskipun kita sudah berusaha latihan sekuat tenaga sampai telinga ini mau pecah dengerin obrolan-obrolan di kaset/ CD tetap aja susah untuk mendapatkan point. Padahal untuk mendapatkan nilai TOEFL diatas 600, keberhasilan di section ini sangat menentukan sekali. Tidak hanya bisa bergantung pada section yang lain saja (structure & writing). Biasanya jika seseorang itu hanya mengandalkan section structure & reading (PBT), score TOEFL yang diperoleh umumnya hanya berkisar antara 550-570.

Sedikit berbeda dengan section yang lain, kemampuan listening tidak bisa ditingkatkan hanya dalam waktu singkat. Perlu tahap dan proses yang berangsur-angsur sampai seseorang itu benar-benar mampu untuk memilah kata yang didengar dengan baik.

Memulai belajar listening secara bertahap semenjak bangku kuliah adalah cara yang tepat. Disamping task yang tidak terlalu banyak hanya berkutat di study, konsentrasi dan daya serap otak juga masih fresh. Jadwal kuliah yang padat juga tidak menjadi masalah, kita bisa lah mencuri waktu 1 atau 2 jam sehari untuk belajar listening. Justru pola belajar yang berangsur-angsur seperti ini lebih baik dibanding persiapan instensif 3 bulan.

Bagaimana dengan materi listening? biasanya kita susah sekali untuk mendapatkan materi listening yang cukup. Hanya bermodal kaset Barron, Cliff atau buku-buku terbitan lokal. Geli juga mendengar beberapa orang teman yang menanyakan hal ini. Padahal di internet sekarang ini banyak sekali media website yang menyediakan materi-materi listening yang siap untuk di download setiap saat. Gratisss lagi.

Misalnya saja voanews.com (http://voanews.com) menyediakan materi listening dalam bentuk berita yang dapat didownload. Jumlahnya materinya banyak sekali, rata-rata untuk setiap berita yang di keluarkan oleh VOA selain ditampilkan dalam format .html website, biasanya juga disediakan file .mp3 nya yang bisa kita download. Jadi kita bisa dengar berita sambil belajar bahasa inggris. Klo teman-teman ada yang bingung dengan kosa kata yang didengar, kita tinggal lihat aja di transcript berita.

Saking dedicatednya :-B, VOA juga menyedikan website khusus untuk pemula yang ingin belajar bahasa inggris. Namanya VOA Special English (http://www.voanews.com/specialenglish/index.cfm). Disini materi berita listening disediakan dalam tempo lambat mungkin sekitar 3/4 lebih lambat dibanding conversation standard. Jadi kita bisa lebih fokus untuk mencoba memilah kata. Untuk awal Special English adalah pilihan yang tepat, jika sudah mulai terbiasa coba naik level dengan mendengarkan materi listening berita yang ada di VoaNews nya sendiri dengan tempo standar.

So gampang kan? dari segi materi bisa dikatakan tidak ada masalah. Tinggal kemauan dan komitmen disini, karena kembali lagi ke awal pembicaraan, kemampuan listening bukan hal yang ditingkatkan dalam waktu singkat. So butuh kesabaran dan konsistensi juga.

BBC juga menyediakan materi listening dalam bentuk berita yang juga dapat didownload. Tapi karena basenya Inggris, tentu pelafalan dan kosa katanya sedikit berbeda. Mungkin untuk teman-teman yang mau belajar IELTS dapat menjadi source yang bagus.

Pilih Kuliah di Luar Negeri atau Dalam Negeri

POTENSIAL, Australian Education Center (AEC) menilai Indonesia merupakan pasar potensial bagi lembaga pendidikan di Negeri Kanguru itu. Selain melalui jalur reguler, Pemerintah Australia juga menyediakan beasiswa untuk jenjang pendidikan S-1 dan S-2 bagi mahasiswa asing.

PELAJARIndonesia tidak perlu khawatir jika ingin melanjutkan kuliah di luar negeri.Banyak lembaga non-profit asing yang memberikan bantuan untuk mewujudkan keinginan itu.

Salah satunya karena Indonesia adalah pasar potensial bagi negara-negara itu untuk mendapatkan pemasukan dari sektor pendidikan. Berdasarkan data dari Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (Depdiknas), lulusan SMA tahun ajaran 2006/2007 berjumlah 1.076.154.Jumlah ini tentu jumlah yang luar biasa.

“Harus diakui, pertimbangan Indonesia sebagai pasar memang ada.Tetapi, itu bukan menjadi satu-satunya alasan utama,” kata Irene Pingkan Umboh,Manajer AEC Jakarta. Berdasarkan data AEC, pada tahun ajaran 2006/2007, AEC telah membantu keberangkatan 5.500 mahasiswa (S-1 dan S-2) ke Australia.

Sampai saat ini,menurut Irene, ada sekitar 15.000 mahasiswa Indonesia yang sedang belajar di Australia. “Rata-rata per tahun sekitar 5.000 orang yang berangkat kuliah di Australia,” kata Irene yang alumnus Blue Mountain Hotel School Australia ini. Irene mengungkapkan, peningkatan kerja sama dan hubungan antarkedua negara di bidang pendidikan sebagai tujuan utama mereka.

Tujuan lainnya adalah membantu para pelajar Indonesia mendapatkan kesempatan memperoleh pendidikan berkualitas di luar negeri. “Fakta bahwa Indonesia harus meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan itu ada dan harus diakui,”lanjutnya.

Australia, ungkap Irene, bisa mengambil peran dalam bidang itu.Terlebih, secara geografis, letak Australia berdekatan dengan Indonesia. Malah, banyak yang menyebut Australia sebagai tetangga belakang halaman Indonesia.

“Faktor ini pula yang membuat mengapa hubungan dan kerja sama yang baik antar kedua negara ini makin penting,”tuturnya. Selain faktor pasar dan peningkatan kerja sama, ada juga faktor sejarah seperti yang ada pada NESO.

“Indonesia dan Belanda kan punya sejarah sejak zaman kolonial dulu. Saya kira itu salah satu alasan mengapa Indonesia adalah negara pertama di mana ada lembaga non-profit bidang pendidikan Belanda,” kata Liza Marsin, Education Promotion Manager NESO Indonesia. Selain di Indonesia, NESO juga ada di lima negara lain, antara lain di China dan Vietnam.

Tips for passing TOEFL

I had my TOEFL on 26th August,2005, and I got a scaled score of 233-290. With the quality of essay I wrote, I am hoping to get anything above the 280 mark.

After GRE, TOEFL seemed to be something like a cakewalk. I did a few CDs, like kaplan, cambridge, and powerprep. But just doing the powerprep is more than enough.
The LISTENING section was all that I was concerned about, since I am not much into English movies, infact I hardly watch movies. Just do not doze off during the listening part, the one liners are more tough 'coz the conversations start and end even before you have had a chance to train your ears. The longer ones were cool. Keep your eyes glued to the comp as a lot of unfamiliar terms will be written down frequently. If a process is being discussed, try remembering it sequentially, as in, what happens after what.And yes, when you hear a conversation, you see two people on the screen. Most of the times, you would have seen the people concerned previously in the powerprep CD while practising. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CONVERSATIONS ARE DIFFERENT HERE AND DO NOT TRY TO RECALL WHAT WERE THESE PEOPLE PARTICULARLY TALKING ABOUT IN YOUR PRACTICE CD. This works as an instant distraction.
The STRUCTURE part was quite okay. Since time is not a constraint, recheck your answers before you have made the final click.
The COMPREHENSION was the most boring part, where you have 4 essays and 4 x 11 = 44 questions. But there is plenty of time, and there are no extra points for being the fastest one to complete them. So do not rush. The essays are just school level ones, unlike the GRE.
The WRITING part, nothing to worry about, I never expected an easy topic like this. Just hone your typing speed and keep typing.
Make use of the earplugs. The sound of the key boards being frantically used around you can be quite a distraction.
In GRE, just mentioning the names of the universities sufficed. Here, I had to mention the departments as well.
As usual, the second ID was needed.
Get plenty of sleep the previous night and just relax.

The NWO project A Computational Model of Language Acquisition aims to develop a computational model of language acquisition. The project team will comprise a postdoc and two PhD students. The PhD student will conduct computer simulations to investigate the emergence and development of neural representations of speech signals. In the first year the focus will be on representations of rhythm and intonation that a foetus is already able to form. The following years will be devoted to research addressing the segmentation of continuous speech signals into word-like units and the emergence of sub-word representations. In addition to designing and conducting the computer simulations, the PhD student is expected to have completed a PhD thesis on the topic by the end of the contract.

Requirements:

The successful candidate has a Master`s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Psychology, Pattern Recognition, or Computer Science. She/he has excellent writing skills and is fluent in English.

Organization:

The Faculty of Arts consists of eleven departments in the area of language and culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and business communication, which together cater for about 2,700 students and collaborate closely in teaching and research. A new constellation in molecular electronics is being formed at Uppsala University; the Uppsala University UniMolecular Electronics Center (U3MEC) composed of eight different research groups and with focus on molecular electronics based on single or small assemblies of molecules. U3MEC comprises expertise in chemistry, physics and engineering, experimentalists as well as theoreticians.

One PhD student position in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry is available. The project involves design and synthesis of novel organosilicon, -germanium, and -tin compounds, and characterization of their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as assembly into nanoelectronics platforms for investigations of electron transport properties.

A suitable candidate has a master of science in chemistry or equivalent, or expects to complete his/her degree before the end of the year. He/she has

(i) a solid experience in organic and/or organometallic synthesis,
(ii) documented good knowledge in physical chemistry, and desirably
(iii) documented interest in computational chemistry and chemical bonding theory.

Job Description:
This Ph. D. research will be carried out within the research programme Logistics of the Transportation Research Institute, more specifically within the domain of freight flows. Candidates will be involved in developing a freight transport model for Flanders.

Ph. D. student 1: Concepts from the sector of freight transport, such as just-in-time and lean production, will have to be integrated in the new model. An extensive data collection is necessary and will precede the actual development of the model. Imperative data are for instance data on individual transport, data on the location of terminals, distribution centers … and data on transport and logistics costs.

Ph. D. student 2: Important decisions, within the framework of this research, that need to be integrated in the model are the size and the frequency of the freight loading, the transport mode and the structure of the transport chain.

Profile and Diploma:

As a college professor, many students approach me for letters of recommendation. Writing these letters is one of the most challenging aspects of my job. How do you fit a comprehensive profile and assessment of a student into a 1-2 page letter? How do you ensure that students provide you with all the relevant information that will help you to write the best letter than you can? How do you protect yourself from liability in writing letters of recommendation? This article takes a closer look at tips to help you in writing letters of recommendation.

Inform Students
Students tend to be uninformed about their needs and responsibilities in seeking letters of recommendation. Guide students by providing them with a detailed list of what will assist you in writing a letter on their behalf.

Many professors create a handout or web page listing the desired information. Here are some suggestions:
Explain the purpose of the letter
Desired focus of the letter (e.g., discuss my research skills and experiences in your lab, or discuss my responsibilities as a teaching assistant in your class)
Useful skills (e.g., computer, statistical, or interpersonal skills)
Related experiences (extracurricular, work experience, clubs, volunteer work)
Courses taken with the faculty member, with grades and sample work (e.g., term paper)

Think About It
Do not immediately agree to write a letter on behalf of a student. Instead, take a little bit of time to think about it and reflect on your experiences with the student.

Be Honest
If you don`t know a student well or cannot write a positive letter on his or her behalf, explain your reservations to inform the applicant. If he or she insists, you can either refuse, write a neutral letter, or include negative evaluations with supporting behavioral examples.

Get Permission
Obtain the student`s written permission (the signed recommendation form included in admissions packets for most graduate programs is suitable)

Be Specific
Use specific examples to support your statements. Specific examples will enhance the value of positive comments and will protect you from legal action. If you choose to include unfavorable information, you must include specific examples to illustrate your point.

Organize the Letter
An effective letter of recommendation is structured. Begin your letter by indicating for whom you are writing, what they are applying to, and an overview of the tone of the letter. Indicate to what extent and length of time you have known the student. Your next step should be to review grades and your records regarding the student.

Next, provide specific examples that illustrate the student`s intellectual ability, capacity for independent and original thought, knowledge of the field, or attitude and motivation. Close by reiterating your overall recommendation and its strength.

Beware of Ambiguity
Letters of recommendation tend to be overwhelmingly positive. Because most letters are inflated, readers examine them as if they were written in code. Recommendation letters thus become a projective test wherein any ambiguity is questioned. Any equivocal information might be interpreted in a negative light, even if you did not intend so.

Before The Interview

Prepare in advance.
Ahead of time, consider the purpose of the interview. Review your UC application for admission as it may be brought up during your interview. Create mock questions you think might be asked. When formulating your answers, remember to emphasize your strengths.

Practice your interview skills with a friend.
Review your interview skills aloud with someone and brainstorm hypothetical situations the interview may encompass. Ask your friend to count the number of times you say “like” and “you know” to make sure you aren`t overusing such filler phrases.

Consider bringing letters of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation are optional. Submit them to your interviewer at the time of your interview. (Letters of recommendation sent to the office may not be considered.)
The Interview

Dress appropriately.
Dress comfortably for your interview, but not too casually. Rule of thumb: wear business casual and no more than two colors. If you are interviewing on the UC Berkeley campus, wear walking shoes.

Arrive on time.
Create a positive first impression by arriving on time.

Monitor your body language.
Good posture gives a confident impression. Keep your hands in your lap or on the table to seem calm rather than touching your hair and face.

Monitor your speech.
Answer in complete sentences when possible, avoiding interjections of “uhm”, “like”, and “you know”. When asked a yes/no question, follow up with a brief, interesting detail that the interviewer might remember. If you don`t understand a question, it`s perfectly acceptable to ask the interviewer to rephrase or repeat the question.

Make eye contact.
Make eye contact throughout the interview. Avoid looking at the floor or ceiling while listening and speaking.

Volunteer information.
When offering information during an interview, remember that it`s the interviewer`s job to decide what`s pertinent and what`s not. It`s your job to “flesh out” your application with details that will convince the interviewer of your strengths. Prepare answers to questions you think might highlight desirable qualities or accomplishments. Phrase what you say about yourself positively. If you are asked why you performed poorly in the sciences, emphasize your talent in creative writing, for example, instead of enumerating excuses.

Be prepared with a good close. At the end of the interview, you may be asked whether you have questions or something to add. You can ask a question, add information that you prepared before the interview, or follow up on a topic covered during the interview itself. Good closure shows that you have been engaged in the exchange. Thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity to meet and make a timely exit, i.e. avoid running out, but also refrain from lingering.

Ever wonder what the folks who award the scholarships want to see? FinAid and FastWeb have polled scholarship providers across the country asking for their tips on applying for scholarships.

Tip 1: Give concrete examples.
If your answer to an essay question is abstract, support it with a concrete example that illustrates your point. The scholarship sponsor wants to see evidence that you satisfy their criteria, not just unsupported statements.

Tip 2: Apply only if you are eligible.
Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully, and make sure that you are eligible before you send in your application. Your application will not be considered if you are not qualified to apply.

Tip 3: Identify the sponsor's goals.
Try to understand the sponsor's motivation in offering the award. Do they want to promote interest in their field? Do they want to identify promising future researchers and business leaders? If you can identify their goals, you can direct your application toward satisfying those goals, increasing your chances of winning the award.

Tip 4: Complete the application in full and follow directions.
Many students fail to follow directions. You can give yourself a competitive advantage by reading the directions carefully. Provide everything that is required. But do not supply things that are not requested. You will not impress and you might be disqualified. Be sure to complete the entire application. If a question does not apply, note that on the application. Do not just leave it blank.

Tip 5: Neatness counts.
Make several photocopies of all the forms you receive. Use the copies as working drafts as you develop your application packet. It is always best to type the application. If you must print, do so neatly and legibly. Proofread the entire application carefully. Nothing is less impressive than an application with misspelled words or grammar errors. Ask a friend, teacher or parent to proofread it as well.

Tip 6: Write an accomplishments resume.
Compile a list of all your accomplishments. This will help you identify your strengths and prepare a better application. Give a copy of the resume to the people who are writing letters of recommendation for you. They will be able to work some of the tidbits into their letters, making it seem like they know you better.

Tip 7: Watch all deadlines.
Impose a deadline for yourself that is at least two weeks before the stated deadline. Use this 'buffer time' to proofread your application before you send it off. YOU are responsible for making sure all parts of the application arrive on time. This includes supporting materials, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts. So make sure everyone who is contributing to your application has ample lead-time. If worse comes to worst, call the scholarship provider in advance and ask if it is possible to receive an extension. Do not just send the materials in late; many committees will refuse late applications. But do not rely on extensions - very few scholarship providers allow them at all.

Tip 8: Take steps to make sure your application gets where it needs to go.
Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet and keep it on file. If your application goes astray, you can always reproduce it quickly. Make sure your name (and social security number, if applicable) appears on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.

Tip 9: Ask for help if you need it.
If you have problems with the application, do not hesitate to call the sponsor. But do not expect anyone to do the work for you.

Tip 10: Remember - your scholarship application represents YOU!
Your ability to submit a neat, timely, complete application reflects on you. It is the face you present to the sponsoring organization. Take pride in yourself by submitting the best application you can.

How to Win a Scholarship

The students that win the most scholarships may not have more positive qualities than you, but they use the following strategy to get noticed by the scholarship committees:

Get Prepared:

Get letters of recommendation from teachers, guidance counselors or leaders in your community. Choose these wisely (make copies).
Get a copy of your high school or college transcript (make copies).
Get involved in your community or in school activities or in your church. If your time is limited due to personal circumstances, working to help with family expenses is also an advantage.
Start writing an essay about your goals and what you have done to date to achieve them. Think about what makes you unique.
Get a picture of yourself. A school picture is perfect. Anything smaller than a wallet size head shot, will do.
Buy some clear plastic binders.
The goal here is to have numerous packages made up ahead of time, ready to submit to the various scholarship committees. The package will include:

a clear plastic binder and within the package
the scholarship application ( you will have to insert this later when you have received each individual application)

followed by an essay that gets you noticed
followed by your transcript (some scholarships do not require this, but if it's impressive, send it)
followed by letters of recommendation and then
place your picture in the front inside cover(on top of the application) in the lower left hand corner (this is not a requirement, but it helps to put a face to the person, for the scholarship committee deciding who receives the awards)

Get Organized:

Begin researching scholarships that match your criteria. Consider using a scholarship search service.
Once you have the scholarships for which you want to apply, keep track of the deadlines.
Create a chart to keep on top of all dates.
The chart should include:

Scholarship name and phone number
Date application must be received by scholarship committee
Date you requested the application
Date you received the application
Date application with above package was mailed
Date you called the Scholarship Agency to verify they received your application package

Get Noticed:
As important as being prepared and organized, it is equally important that you have an essay that gets you noticed. Even if you feel you master the English language, your essay should be critique by someone who has experience in essay writing. Ask an english professor to review your essay.
